Anna Nicole Smith died yesterday. I first found out about it when I signed onto the Internet Thursday morning (or afternoon) when I woke up. I wasn't shocked in the least bit. It didn't come as any big surprise to me.
I had quickly let the death of Anna pass out of my stream of thought--that is--until I had turned on the TV for lunch (about five-ish) to watch the info-tainment shows on the big three cable news stations; CNN, FOX, and MSNBC. Uninterrupted coverage is what they referred to it as. I wouldn't have expected any less from FOX, MSNBC overplays the Hollywood news a bit too, it was CNN that surprised me. To watch Wolf Blitzer have to report on Anna's death for the hour was hard. I think the guy's a bit of a fake; a tool, second rate, but I could tell by his delivery even he knew it to be bush league reporting. I quickly turned the TV off.
My father came home, and he brought up the topic of Anna's death in discussion. I believe how it was delivered by him was, 'what do you think of Anna Nicole Smith's death?'. I told him I was crushed. It was good acting on my part--because he had questioned whether or not I was serious. And I wasn't. It was a cold response. I'm not a cold person and I did feel some.....shame--is the closest word that comes to mind--for my remark.
What caused my cold response to the question was caused by the ridiculousness of the media, maybe even society today. There is a war going where American soldiers are dying by the dozens a week. And Iraqis by the hundreds a week. (Iraqi lives, or deaths, don't mean as much as Americans--another fault of our media) But here are the three big cable news stations airing uninterrupted coverage of the death of who? An ex-playboy model/reality show star? Where the fuck are our priorities?
I was watching (The)Larry King(of Notre Dame) tonight, the show was about Anna. I watched video of Anna Improving in front of the camera. She appeared to be a warm and funny gal. I was awoken to the fact that Anna wasn't only a persona--she was a person.
